LABOUR rights activists and organisations launched a special campaign-2012 to ensure giving security cover and other facilities to all kiln workers of some selected districts and towns of Lahore division by getting their computerised national identity cards (CNICs) issued.
According to a press release issued on Friday, Bonded Labour Liberation Front (BLLF), Pakistan, Secretary General Syed Ghulam Fatima said that the campaign had been launched under the banner of the BLLF in collaboration with the NADRA, civil society and local notables in various target areas of Lahore and Kasur districts.
She said that the core objective of this major activity was to get CNICs issued through NADRA to a majority of bricks kiln workers and then to ensure provision of all constitutional rights and privileges, social security cards, senior citizen allowance, dowry grant and minimum wages of Rs 517 per thousand bricks to them.
She said a baseline survey conducted by the BLLF revealed that nearly 80 percent male and female bricks kiln workers had not been issued CNICs because of minor objections raised by NADRA officials.
“Actually the bricks kiln owners at the time of hiring labour get the workers’ documents such as old ID cards, birth record etc in order to deprive them of all legal facilities,” she added. She said that the officials concerned should avoid raising minor objections and issue them CNICs for the sake of giving them rights. She said a baseline survey conducted by the BLLF revealed that nearly 80 percent male and female bricks kiln workers had not been issued CNICs because of minor objections raised by NADRA officials.
